Professional Development: What is our future and where are we headed?
Posted: February 15, 2012 Filed under: events, general information, teaching tips Leave a commentIn spite of freezing cold wind and rain, teachers from different parts of the state and even from Guadalajara came to attend Morelia Chapter’s Regional Convention this past February 11 and 12.
The event was inaugurated by the Assistant Director of the Universidad Internacional Jefferson. Due to a bad Web connection, 
the opening plenary was moved to the slot of the closing plenary, but we were still able to share what Jose Manuel Villfuerte of the US Embassy had to say.
In keeping with the theme of the convention, Richmond’s Mauricio Cortes’ presentation / workshop ICTs in ELT gave participants clear ideas of how to keep student learning at maximum level. He also got us up
and dancing and moving as we explored ways to keep students active and engaged. Here is the information on TechnologyStandards that Mauricio has left for all Mextesol members and interested parties. 
Concurrent workshops offered to conference-goers a deeper look at
Extensive Reading activities;
Ideas for certification;
How CADI or a self-access learning center provides learners with ways of learning how they learn.
Online speaking activity: Fotobabble with the use of blogs, in which participants found their technological prowess on the TIM.indicators matrix before exploring Web 2.0 tools.

This project is a virtual extension of the TESOL 2012 Convention in Philadelphia in which educators around the globe will have the chance to enhance their professional development, network, collaborate, share and learn with like-minded professionals in wonderful online sessions that were carefully designed by our moderators.

Here is a take on lesson planning for you
Writing lesson plans is an integral part of teaching. Too many beginning teachers and trainees consider lesson plans a tedious and unnecessary chore which they must do for their supervisors. Once they are working, they resort to lesson plans only when they will be observed.
Frustration with lesson plans results from three sources:
1. They do not understand the need: the purpose and rationale, although explained to them, is not felt or shared.
2. Trainees find it difficult to write measurable objectives.
3. Trainees find formats vague or of little help. They struggle to make the plan fit the format instead of the other way around.
To address these frustrations, this post will address these sources.
What will well-planned lessons do for you?
1. Focus you.
2. Provide you with a plan and a back-up plan.
3. Force you to consider the purpose of the lesson and reason for each step.
4. Establish clear golas for the lesson that are understood by you and the learner.
5. Allow you to predict potential problems.
6. Help you design a coherent and cohesive lesson within a framework of a unit or annual plan.
7. Help you make a smooth transition form one lesson to the next.
8. Provide you with a written record of the course.
9. Encourage you to examine the lessons critically and make improvements.
